Enhance your professional edge with our new Business Writing course

In a technical environment, being able to convey complex information effectively to a diverse audience is vital.

In industry, critical decisions are often based on written communications such as reports, emails, business cases and proposals. The impact and accuracy of your writing reflects on you, your organisation and the industry you work in.

Recognising this, we are thrilled to introduce our new Business Writing for Technical Professionals course. It is specifically tailored for those working in technical roles. The course aims to bridge the gap between technical expertise and professional communication, ensuring that people working in these environments can convey their ideas clearly, concisely and persuasively.

Course overview

Our Business Writing for Technical Professionals course is designed to enhance the communication skills of professionals in the industry. The course leader, Jakki Bendell, is an experienced writing consultant who has trained technical professionals in the private and public sectors for many years, in the UK and abroad.

The course includes several modules, each focusing on different aspects of business writing, to ensure a comprehensive learning experience.

  1. What makes business writing effective? In this module, we discuss the principles of good business writing in the modern, digital age. We will cover how people read on screens, and a writing process that can help writers produce clear, concise documents to tight deadlines.
  2. Planning. Using practical exercises, this module focuses on understanding purpose, audience and key messages in written documents. It discusses how to handle diverse readers with different functional backgrounds.
  3. Principles of writing style. In this module, participants will learn seven principles of Plain English and and how they differ from the academic style. It also covers techniques for writing persuasively. There are worked examples and practical exercises to quickly develop these skills.
  4. Structure and sequence. This module focuses on structuring documents that are easy to navigate and have impact. Here we cover tools and techniques to structure any document, from short emails to complex business cases.
  5. Crafting professional emails. Participants will learn how to write subject lines that get attention, structure messages for maximum clarity, and ensure that their emails prompt the desired responses. It also covers tone and how to avoid the common pitfalls of digital messages.
  6. Incorporating visuals. This module introduces best practices for incorporating charts, graphs and other illustrations into documents.
  7. Editing and proofreading. Participants will learn how to spot common errors in punctuation and grammar, including the use of software tools to improve readability and accuracy.

How it differs from the Technical Report Writing course

The Technical Report Writing course focuses on the accurate and detailed documentation of engineering work. The new Business Writing course, on the other hand, emphasises the broader context of professional communication and is suitable for engineers and other technical specialists such as HR, QA, procurement and IT. Here are the key differences:

  • Audience: Business writing often targets a more diverse audience, including non-technical stakeholders, clients and executives. This course teaches participants how to adjust their writing style to meet the needs of a wider range of readers.
  • Purpose: Business writing aims to inform, persuade and sometimes prompt action. Our course emphasises the art of persuasion and the importance of crafting messages that influence business decisions and outcomes.
  • Writing style: Business writing requires a balance between formality and readability. Our course covers how to maintain a professional tone while ensuring that the communication is engaging and accessible.
  • Content scope: Technical report writing is confined to the technical aspects of a project, often involving detailed analyses and data. Business writing encompasses a broader range of content, from emails to proposals and executive summaries. Our course uses case studies and exercises to provide comprehensive training that applies to all forms of business communication.
